This activity supported the application of RBF/OBA  approaches  to  scale  up  the  Lighting Africa  program  in  3 sub-regions: East Africa, Francophone West Africa and Anglophone West Africa.

Activities included:

  • An analytical study on the potential  for RBF/OBA  approaches  for  manufacturers  and distributors  of  off-grid  solutions  to  expand the market and to reach the poor.
  • Development  of  country  off-grid lighting programs with a focus on market research and the design of the business development and RBF components.

Closed.

The DRC study and other activities focused on off-grid financing were delivered as planned.

The  GPOBA-funded activities focused on outreach and market development.  

Program development and support to client agencies included preparing a US$1 million component for off-grid lighting activities within an IDA financed energy operation in Burkina Faso, preparing a US$2.5 million component for off-grid lighting activities within an IDA financed energy operation in Mali, and supporting upstream analytic work in South Sudan for the initial dialogue with the Government. An example of outreach is a conference held in Senegal that reviewed off-grid solutions in ongoing and prospective Lighting  Africa countries.
